Poverty in America
While caring for vast numbers of children around the World, ECHO
is also active feeding hundreds of thousands of desperate and hungry
children in the US.
Hunger and Poverty in US
Hurricane Katrina exposed the harsh reality of poverty in America.
While New Orleans tourists visited the French Quarters, just streets
away whole communities were living in poverty.
Despite talk of economic growth, poverty rates have actually risen for four
straight years in the US.
The Hard Facts
More than 37 million americans live in poverty!
Poor is defined in US as "under 65 and earning less than $9800
a year." Wage comparisons, however, cannot be made with
Europe for example, where socialized healthcare is freely provided for all. In
US health insurance alone can cost a husband and wife, with two children
over $9000 a year! As a result, up to one in three American citizens
have no health coverage.
Your gift to ECHO today, will help us to make a difference in the
lives of hundreds of thousands of struggling families. |
